the COVISE Virtual Environment Renderer based on OpenSceneGraph is a flexible VR system. It is tightly integrated with the COVISE visualization system, but also serves as the renderer for its data-parallel successor Vistle. This allows several users to collaborate in immersive virtual environments to perform simulation analysis.
OpenCOVER, together with COVISE, forms the basis for a virtual prototyping concept in which the geometry, as well as the behaviour of virtual and hybrid prototypes, can be studied and modified interactively. Engineers can thus assess future products much easier and judge them in a more comprehensive way. This reduces development times and increases reliability.
OpenCOVER runs on all projection-based systems such as CAVEs (TM) and tiled displays. OpenCOVER supports all major tracking systems. With augmented reality techniques, virtual objects can overlay real scenes. This allows the creation of hybrid prototypes where e.g. simulation results can be displayed directly on a physical prototype. Thus, simulation results can be compared to experiments and physical properties of prototypes such as the look or haptics can be evaluated together with simulation results.
The VRML97 interface allows collaborative viewing and interaction with virtual worlds coming from CAD or modeling/animation systems without manual modification of the datasets. Special VRML extensions like AR-sensors, multitexturing, environment/cube mapping and GLSL shaders permit high quality design and architecture presentations.
OpenCOVER is a comprehensive system that comprises support for collaborative VR, augmented reality, tangible interfaces, tablet input, full VRML97 support, volume rendering and cluster support. The development of OpenCOVER was initiated at the German Collaborative Research Center “Rapid Prototyping”. OpenCOVER is developed further in a continuous effort at HLRS.
