ONLINE COURSE: Fortran for Scientific Computing

Overview

Sep 17: Due to corona virus, we'll provide this course as an ONLINE course (using Zoom).

This course is dedicated to scientists and students to learn (sequential) programming with Fortran for scientific applications. The course teaches newest Fortran standards. Hands-on sessions will allow users to immediately test and understand the language constructs. This workshop provides scientific training in Computational Science, and, in addition, encourages the scientific exchange of the participants among themselves.

(This course has the same content as the course offered in spring.)

Familiarity with Linux and Linux editors is recommended. Basics/principles of programming (in any language). Basic mathematics (integration and differentiation).

Exercises on your Computer

Please be aware that you need gfortran on your computer.

  • On your Linux machine, Fortran is installed as part of gcc.
  • To install gfortran on your windows-computer, please go to the URL
       http://www.equation.com/servlet/equation.cmd?fa=fortran 
    and download the latest weekly snapshot as a self-extracting file in the 32-bit or the 64-bit version.
    The name is, e.g., "gcc-10-20200405-64.exe" < ftp://ftp.equation.com/gcc/gcc-10-20200405-64.exe > 
    The name and version may change every few days.
    Download this file and execute it. You might need administrator privileges. After finishing the installation, please open a "cmd" window. In the window type in
       gfortran -v
    You should see as last line
       gfortran version <version number> <some additional data>

Late registrations after the deadline are still possible but maybe with reduced quality of the handouts.
