On the booth of Germany’s Ministry for Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung/BMBF), HLRS itemized 2D-, 3D- and augmented reality presentations focusing primarily on the overarching theme „Supercomputing in the Field of Regenerative Power Production“. The 3D presentations, which were very well received by the countless visitors stopping by at BMBF’s booth, were complemented by hands-on exhibits regarding hydro-power production methods. One of these exhibits, provided by EnBW, one of the largest German energy companies, introduced visitors to the concept, the idea behind and the benefits of pumped storage hydro-power plants and how they complement efforts to provide green energy derived from wind and solar plants. By using Augmented Reality techniques, people were able to see the water flow through the runner of a real full size water turbine provided by hydro power station manufacturer Stellba Hydro AG.

In addition to GCS’s main focus at CeBIT, additional GCS showcases gave visitors a good idea of the overall activities of the three national supercomputer centers in various fields of research and development, such as Astrophysics (Galaxy Formation and GADGET-Simulation), Biophysics (Prion-Aggregation), QCD and more.

Highlight of GCS’s participation at CeBIT was the visit of Prof. Dr. Annette Schavan, Federal Minster for Education and Research, who was given a detailed Virtual Reality presentation by HLRS’s Dr. Uwe Wössner, showcasing the planning stage of a pumped storage hydro-power plant in Forbach/Black Forrest. EnBW, operator of the hydro plant, used simulation methods to create a Virtual Reality pre-view of the future three-stage hydro-power plant, its various implementation options and its possible effects on environment, wild life and tourism.

Prof. Roland Rühle passed away

The former director of HLRS Professor Roland Rühle passed away on February 25, 2012. Prof. Rühle...

Prof. Rühle created the High Performance Computing Center as the first German national supercomputing center in 1996. Until his retirement in 2003 he was director of the center and established its worldwide reputation as a lighthouse of engineering simulation. In 1995 Prof. Rühle took a leading role in establishing the HWW – a public-private-partnership that helped bringing supercomputing power to the regional industrial players like Daimler and Porsche. Until 2011 Prof. Rühle served as the director of HWW.
With the death of Prof. Rühle the HLRS loses its founder and most important promoter. He was convinced from early on that simulation was a key technology for decades to come. His keen insight into the concepts and structure of computer science paired with his excellent skills as a physicist and an engineer allowed him to break new ground in the field of simulation. As a director he was a strong personality. For the staff members of the centers and groups he was responsible for, he was both a personal and a highly esteemed intellectual advisor. Four of his PhD graduates received offers of professorships at German and US universities. Supercomputers and simulation were his scientific passions. But more than that, he was an outstanding tutor and excellent friend to his many employees and PhD students over three decades.
Prof. Rühle got a diploma degree from the University of Stuttgart in 1964 and soon after joined the Institute for Nuclear Energy and Energy Systems. In 1967 he took responsibility for a working group on data management and numerical methods. In 1973 Prof. Rühle earned a doctoral degree in energy engineering from the University of Stuttgart. In 1975 Prof. Rühle was granted a professorship for computer science in mechanical engineering. His work in simulation and supercomputing moved him to the position of scientific director of the computing center of the University of Stuttgart (RUS) in 1986 and in 1992 he took responsibility as the sole director of the center. Since 1991 he was the director of the chair for computer simulation and visualization at the Institute for Computer Applications for the University of Stuttgart.

80 guests enjoyed the inauguration ceremony that took place at HLRS on February 24 when Europe’s fastest civil system was officially made available to scientists. The Minister-President of the state of Baden-Württemberg highlighted the necessity of supercomputing simulation for the economic changes required in the future. German Federal Minister for Education and Science Annette Schavan emphasized that HLRS is taking the leading role in simulation in engineering supporting its partners in Juelich (biology) and Garching (astrophysics) in setting up not only supercomputing centers but centers of excellence in simulation. The president of the University of Stuttgart Wolfram Ressel pointed at the important role of HLRS in turning the University of Stuttgart into the leading university in the field of simulation science. Pete Ungaro CEO of Cray was excited about installing the first Petflops system of Cray outside the US and highlighted the importance of the collaboration of HLRS and Cray in Exascale developments. Christoph Gümbel, director of virtual vehicle design at Porsche AG, pointed at the outstanding importance of simulation for car manufacturers aiming at keeping their lead in a worldwide competition.
