PICLas - Simulating Plasma Flows

PICLas - Project Overview

Instationary magnetoplasmadynamic (IMPD) thruster (schematic)
The large system memory of the NEC SX machines enables the simulation of high numbers of particles

Numerical Modeling and Simulation of Highly Rarefied Plasma Flows.

DFG. 2008 – 2011.

Partners: HLRS, IAG (Universität Stuttgart), IRS (Universität Stuttgart), IHM (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe)

In this project an unsteady (or pulsed) magnetoplasmadynamic (IMPD) thruster is simulated coupling several different numerical methods:

  • Particle-In-Cell (PIC)
  • Direct-Simulation-Monte-Carlo (DSMC)
  • Fokker-Planck (FP)

The large system memory and vector CPUs of the NEC SX machines make them a good choice for these simulations of high numbers of particles.
