PICLas - Simulating Plasma Flows
PICLas - Project Overview

- Instationary magnetoplasmadynamic (IMPD) thruster (schematic)

- The large system memory of the NEC SX machines enables the simulation of high numbers of particles
Numerical Modeling and Simulation of Highly Rarefied Plasma Flows.
DFG. 2008 – 2011.
Partners: HLRS, IAG (Universität Stuttgart), IRS (Universität Stuttgart), IHM (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe)
In this project an unsteady (or pulsed) magnetoplasmadynamic (IMPD) thruster is simulated coupling several different numerical methods:
- Particle-In-Cell (PIC)
- Direct-Simulation-Monte-Carlo (DSMC)
- Fokker-Planck (FP)
The large system memory and vector CPUs of the NEC SX machines make them a good choice for these simulations of high numbers of particles.
More information on the project can be found here.
