The CAVE is a cube with a side length of 2.7m. The floor is made of a three layer laminated safety glass, covered by a rear projection screen while the walls and ceiling are built of dark plexiglass screens. The images are rear projected at WUXGA resolution by five Projectiondesign F35 AS3D single chip active stereo DLP projectors with separate inputs for both left and right pictures. The large-size and immersive projection encourages users to discuss their datasets with on-site colleagues. Furthermore, it is possible discuss results with worldwide partners in collaborative working environments while looking at the same data.
For the tracking of the viewer's head and hand we use an ART Trackpack optical tracking system.
The CAVE and tiled display are driven by a DALCO Visualization cluster of 22 Nodes powered by two quad core Sandy bride 3.3 GHz Xeon CPUs. Two head nodes are equipped with 256 GB RAM, the rendering nodes with 32 GB. All nodes will be equipped with Nvidia K5000 or K6000 GPUs. A high speed QDR infiniband interconnect provides enough bandwidth for interactive simulations as well as high speed parallel rendering. The dual boot cluster can either run under Linux (currently Scientific Linux 6.3) or Windows HPC Server 2008 R2.
On the software side the CAVE is driven by our COVISE virtual reality front-end called OpenCOVER. This software allows interaction with on-going numerical simulations and post-processing steps mainly in the area of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and structural mechanics (e.g. crash analysis).
