Virtual Reality Artwork to Debut at HLRS on Tag der Wissenschaft

22 June 2017

On Saturday July 1 HLRS once again opens its doors to the general public as part of the University of Stuttgart's public outreach day. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour our supercomputer and explore a new immersive digital artwork.

The artwork—called Infinities—was created by Brazilian artist Regina Silveira, who recently stayed at HLRS to work with the CAVE, a virtual reality facility used for visualizations of large datasets. The project was undertaken in cooperation with the Instituto Itaú Cultural, São Paulo, in an operation conceived by MATTconcept, an international art projects platform.

As a gift to HLRS Silveira donated Infinities for exhibition to the general public. It will receive its world premiere on the Tag der Wissenschaft from 3:30-4:30 PM.

Program at HLRS

During the Tag der Wissenschaft, visitors will also have the opportunity to get a rare look behind the scenes at one of Germany's largest high-performance computing facilities and learn how supercomputing is transforming research and technology design. Visitors can:

  • Tour our computer room, home to Hazel Hen, Germany's fastest supercomputer
  • Experience virtual reality visualizations, including a driving simulator and an immersive visualization of a city
  • Meet HLRS staff working on cutting-edge research projects
  • Learn about HLRS's training programs in high-performance computing
  • Children can join a rally in which they seek answers to questions related to supercomputing. There will be prizes for those who complete the rally.

We look forward to seeing you here.
