This guidebook, "Sustainability in Computing Centers" was developed as part of the project "Sustainability in HPC Centers II." The primary focus of this project was to implement a sustainability concept at the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS). The result was the development of an environmental management system that was certified in compliance with EMAS, the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, and the DIN EN ISO 50001 standard for energy management in organizations.
By publishing this guidebook we would like to make the experience we gathered on the road to improving our sustainability accessible to other computing centers. The practical examples contained in this guidebook arose in the context of a public institution that specializes in high-performance computing. Nevertheless, much of what we learned will also be of interest to computing centers in the commercial sector as well.
We hope that you will find many useful tips in this guide that will help you in implementing your own plans for making supercomputing more sustainable.
