GridFTP is a Service to transfer large amounts of data. It outclasses "classic" FTP through its ability to move data with high speed by using separate parallel streams through different TCP-connections, especially if systems are connected with high bandwidth networks. The possibility to restart interrupted transfers or to control the transfer between two GridFTP servers (e.g. at different computer centers) with a locally installed client are further advantages of this service. The file systems of our HPC systems HAWK and VULCAN are directly connected to our GridFTP servers. To use this service, a personal X509-certificate and a GridFTP client (globus-url-copy as part of Globus toolkit, Freeware) is required.
