HLRS and Ukrainian University Renew Collaboration Agreement

04 March 2022

The High-Performance Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart and Donetsk National Technical University (DNTU) have formally extended a collaboration agreement that will continue to facilitate international scientific cooperation.

The renewal of the collaboration agreement took place as Russian forces invaded Ukraine, threatening the country's independence. The University of Stuttgart announced the renewal of the cooperation on March 1 as part of a press release pledging its solidarity with scientists and students at academic institutions in Ukraine and Russia. "The science sector will act decisively and with unity in response to Putin's inconceivable attack against the Ukrainian people and thus against a free Europe," said University of Stuttgart Rector Prof. Wolfram Ressel.

The long and fruitful relationship between Stuttgart and its partner university has supported regular meetings and staff exchanges aimed at increasing expertise at both institutions in the fields of high-performance computing and simulation.

HLRS Director Prof. Dr. Michael Resch welcomed the renewal of the collaboration, remarking, "Our cooperation with the DNTU goes back to 1973, taking place in a friendly and professional manner even through difficult times. We join the world in being shocked and outraged by this act of aggression by the Russian government. Our thoughts and hearts are with the people of Ukraine.“

With approximately 25,000 students, Donetsk National Technical University is one of the largest technical universities in Ukraine. Fields of emphasis in its educational and research programs include geology, geo-informatics, mining, metallurgy, electrical engineering and automation, energy and electrical engineering, chemical engineering and ecology, computer engineering, and economics. The State University of Informatics and Artificial Intelligence has been affiliated with the DNTU since 2011.

The renewal of the collaboration agreement aims to build upon past activities involving HLRS and to promote new cooperation between scientists in Ukraine and at the University of Stuttgart in other fields related to engineering and simulation sciences.
