Prof. Egon Krause has passed away at the age of 92. Being an outstanding scientist in the field of aerospace engineering, Egon fully understood that to compete internationally German science needed national HPC. So, he supported the creation of HLRS, serving as the first chairman of the steering committee and providing support, advice, and encouragement to the young HLRS team. Egon was also the first to understand that German HPC needed to collaborate, and so invited the chairmen of the steering committees of JSC, LRZ, and HLRN to meet regularly. By so doing, he laid the foundation for what became the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing.
But Egon’s work and contribution went beyond science and HPC. In 1973 he was among the few scientists to establish connections with Soviet scientists, laying the foundation for the long-term exchange of people and ideas and contributing to the melting period of the cold war.
HLRS will keep the memory of Prof. Egon Krause alive, aim to follow in his scientific foot steps, and continue his approach of giving his all to support the next generation of young scientists. His death is a great loss but also gives us all the great duty to follow him in his scientific and personal commitment.
