Resource Efficient Computing

EffiComp guides companies along a structured pathway toward the productive use of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence for improved resource efficiency.

Many companies, particularly start-ups and SMEs, are well aware of the potential that high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) offer for optimizing their processes, yet frequently struggle with the perceived complexity of getting started. Added to this is a degree of skepticism toward the energy consumption associated with these technologies. Yet this is precisely where a major opportunity lies: when applied effectively, HPC and AI can significantly improve a company's resource efficiency, unlocking both economic and environmental benefits.

From Insight to Practice

Building on the findings of its predecessor project RescHKI, EffiComp takes the next step: where RescHKI identified and tested the fundamental potential of HPC and AI for resource efficiency, EffiComp translates this knowledge into a structured, hands-on framework that guides companies through a clearly defined six-step process, ranging from initial orientation to productive deployment. This encompasses pilot projects and proof-of-concept studies, consulting and implementation support, and direct access to HLRS's HPC and AI infrastructure. The end-to-end process also enables the project to reach a broader target audience than before.
HLRS contributes its expertise in HPC architecture, AI applications, and technology transfer, linking EffiComp with existing initiatives such as EuroCC and the AI factory HammerHAI. Together with project partners SICOS BW GmbH, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and Umwelttechnik BW GmbH, the project establishes a coordinated ecosystem that bridges deep technical expertise with real-world business practice.
Sustainable Transfer

By the end of the project, a proven transfer process, documented success stories, and a resource efficiency data pool will be in place. EffiComp will thus make a measurable contribution to the ecological and digital transformation of Baden-Württemberg's economy toward greater resilience and sustainability.
