Parallel Programming with MPI, OpenMP and Tools

The focus is on programming models MPI and OpenMP. Hands-on sessions (in C, Fortran, and Python) will allow users to immediately test and understand the basic constructs of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) and the shared memory directives of OpenMP (in C and Fortran). The Thursday is dedicated to tools. This course provides scientific training in Computational Science, and in addition, the scientific exchange of the participants among themselves.  It is organized by ZIH in cooperation with HLRS.

  • Unix / C or Fortran (or Python for the MPI part)

  • Basic: 13 hours
  • Intermediate: 14 hours 30 minutes
  • Advanced: 9 hours 30 minutes

Social event

On the first evening, we invite you to a short guided tour of Dresden's historic old town (approx. 1 hour, free of charge). Afterward, we have reserved seats at a restaurant directly in the old town (self-paid).
On Thursday, March 18, 2027, we are organizing a joint evening at Restaurant Max Altstadt. We hope you will be able to join us for these evening events.

The MPI-1 part of the course is based on the MPI course developed by the EPCC Training and Education Centre, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre.

HLRS Training Collaborations in HPC and AI

HLRS is part of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS), together with JSC in Jülich and LRZ in Garching near Munich. SIDE is the German National Competence Centre (NCC) for High-Performance Computing. HLRS is also a member of the Baden-Württemberg initiative bwHPC. 
Since 2025, HLRS has been coordinating one of the AI Factories of the EuroHPC JU: HammerHAI.
